[de]ciding

[De]ciding plays on the hidden weight in the word decide. The suffix -cide comes from the same root you hear in words like homicide, genocide, pesticide, or insecticide – it carries the idea of killing, bringing death, and of bringing something to an end.

To decide, then, isn’t just to choose; it is to let something die - an option, a dream, an ideal, a part or version of yourself.

This body of work reflects on that cost; there is a violence and surrender that needs to happen to bring the tension to clarity, because a real decision demands that one thing be sacrificed, laid aside and surrendered for the other thing to live. And while we don’t always make good decisions, decisions are normally made so the better thing can live, have life and flourish. We only truly live because something has paid a cost.
