About Lorraine Simonds

LORRAINE SIMONDS

My name is Lorraine and I create watercolour paintings that journal and process the personal thoughts, emotions and memories that ruminate in my mind and heart.

I’m a Jesus believing, scotch sipping, Brazilian jiu jitsu fighting, plant watering, Rottweiler walking, bass playing, scuba diving, shouty, deep thinking, stubborn, only child, a loyal sister to many, and a wife of one. But at the end of the day, I’m an imperfect person striving to walk in perfect love with any and all.

ARTIST STATEMENT

I journal and process personal thoughts and observations of suffering and beauty through expressive brushwork in watercolour.  I explore themes of the temporal, longing, suffering, vanity and memory, which contrasts against my intentional use of the vibrant and illuminating medium. My more recent work play in between a comfortable tolerance of vague, abstracted forms and places of clarity and high-detail rendering. For me, my style gives the nod to the brushwork and ethos of my Chinese heritage and my Western education, which had been a point of contention and catalyst of distress in my early childhood.

Today, I work from a place that is firmly seated in a position of simultaneous sadness and deep-rooted joy. :)

Artist Biography

Born in Plymouth, England, visual arts has woven itself into Lorraine’s lifetime through various means. In early childhood she was artistically self-taught, reading many books on drawing; her father would take her out to the English Moorlands where she would sit for hours outside and capture the landscape. In her adolescent years, she began specializing in portraiture in acrylic and oil mediums. Later, at Plymouth College of Art & Design, in the darkrooms, she inadvertently formalized ideas into a functional theory of contrast, focus and composition with her studies in Film Photography.

Lorraine shifted away from the more formal arts at the University of Leeds while pursuing her BA in Fine Art. During this time while she built a foundation of the History of Art and Philosophy and shifted towards Micro Sculptures, Photography, Animation and Performance art. Post-graduation, she has spent a short time in Kuala Lumpur before moving to Squamish, Canada in 2009.

In early adulthood, visual arts developed vocationally through her consistent practice of branding, photography, graphic and interior design as a Hospitality Professional and extensive volunteer work until post-pandemic she felt the insatiable call to return to the brush.

Lorraine’s adult education and continuing informal practice in counselling and extensive travels in 2017-2019, visiting over 20 countries, continue to inform her of our human condition and the complexities that unite us all.

Techniques

Much of Lorraine’s current work is accomplished purely in watercolour and without any preliminary sketches or underdrawings.

FUN FACTS

I have a head-turning cackle and I’m not afraid to use in public.

The Vancouver - Squamish - Whistler corridor has been her home since 2009, of which she produces the majority of her work from her home studio in Squamish.
