Quiet Song - The Lady at Shuozhou

$700.00

12x16, Unframed Watercolour on Cotton, 2026

When you want to draw a straight line, you have to fix your eyes on where you want the line to go. If you want to drive a car without crashing, you have to look further ahead on the road, not the rear view mirror. Similarly, if you want to be content, one must fix your eyes on whatever is true, honourable, just, pure, lovely, of anything worthy of praise – anything excellent. Fixing your eyes on these things leads to gratitude, and gratitude is one of lifes best anti-anxieties. Did you know anxiety can't easily coexist in the brain with gratitude?

I painted this woman in Shouzhou, whom I met at the International Watercolour Festival in China with @rockwellarts.global. Theres something in her quiet and content presence that stayed with me.
